VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has started resurfacing a 20-mile section of Route 14 from 3-miles east of Route 360 to Route 614 (Devils Three Jump Road) in King and Queen County. 

Drivers should anticipate lane closures, potential travel delays and varying driving surfaces along this 20-mile stretch of Route 14.

Each work zone will extend approximately two miles, progressing eastward towards Route 614 (Devils Three Jump Road). There may be multiple active work zones underway within the 20-mile project.

Weather permitting, crews will work on Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. in each two-mile work zone on Route 14.

Flaggers will direct one-way, alternating traffic through each work zone. Motorists are urged to stay in their lane and avoid passing in the work zone.   

This work is part of a multi-phase resurfacing project that includes a cape seal application. 

Cape seal is designed to improve the condition of the road, extend the life of the pavement and prevent further deterioration. When complete, the road surface will have a uniform color and appearance that will cover previous pothole repairs and cracking. Motorists will have a skid-resistant travel surface.

The Route 14 resurfacing project is expected to continue until November 2019. 

What Can Drivers Expect Next?

Upon completion of the current resurfacing phase, drivers can expect sand and gravel to remain on the road surface for approximately two weeks to allow the asphalt “chip-seal” layer to cure. 

Drivers can expect workers to return to sweep any remaining sand and gravel from the road. 

After the road is cleared of sand and gravel, a final travel surface will be applied. This is a mix of crushed stone and liquid asphalt, which will provide a uniform black color. The finished product will initially have a slightly textured surface, which will be smoothed out over time by vehicle traffic.  

The final phase will include the replacement of pavement markings, line striping, centerline rumble strips and reflective snow-plowable pavement markers.
