TOTTEN TAPPED TO SERVE AS RICHMOND DISTRICT ENGINEER
Long-time employee brings 34 years of engineering experience to job
CHESTERFIELD, Va. – Dale R. Totten, PE, is the new Richmond District engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). He manages the transportation program for 14 counties within the Richmond area, covering more than 18,000 lane miles of highways in four cities and 15 towns, and more than 3,000 structures.
“Dale has the expansive engineering, maintenance and operations experience needed to serve as district engineer,” said VDOT Chief Deputy Commissioner Cathy McGhee, P.E. “During his 19 years with the agency, Dale has approached his work with honesty, integrity and transparency, which has allowed him to be successful in both good and challenging times,” she added.
Totten joined VDOT in 2003 as an assistant resident engineer for the Chesterfield Residency. He has worked as a resident engineer in the Chesterfield Residency, regional traffic engineer in Central Region Operations and district maintenance engineer for the Lynchburg District. For the past three years, Totten has served as VDOT Richmond’s Deputy District Engineer. Prior to joining the agency, he held engineering roles in the private industry.
“I’m excited and proud to be leading one of the largest districts in the state, and to be working with dedicated employees who are committed to project completions, top-notch maintenance and preparedness for any event,” Totten said.
Totten has been involved with many projects of note, including the completion of Route 288, widening of Route 360 from Swift Creek to Spring Run Road, widening of Route 10 from Greenyard Road to Frith Lane, I-95/Temple Avenue Roundabout improvement, the Route 10 Superstreet project, the reconstruction of the Appomattox Bypass (Route 460) pavement; the response, recovery and restoration work in Chesterfield and Powhatan counties after Tropical Storm Isabel and Hurricane Gaston; and the response, recovery and restoration work after Hurricanes Florence and Michael in the Lynchburg District.
Totten earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Pennsylvania State University at University Park. He’s held a professional engineering license in Virginia since 1994.
