STAUNTON – (1:30 p.m.) Improving conditions continue on Shenandoah Valley roads as Virginia Department of Transportation crews continue to clear and treat area roadways.  Most roads are in minor to moderate condition.

Travelers through various areas of the Commonwealth of Virginia will encounter a wide variety of road conditions.  Motorists should drive defensively and anticipate roads covered with snow to roads wet from rain or ice.  Motorists are asked to remove any snow or ice from their vehicles before they begin any trips today.  All occupants in the vehicle should use their seatbelts.

Refreezing is anticipated for night travel.  Be alert for icing conditions particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Here are the road conditions as of 1:30 p.m.in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany County. Minor conditions in Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County,

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Alleghany, Shenandoah, Warren, Clarke and Page counties. Moderate to minor conditions in Frederick County. Minor conditions in Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Page counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
